LYDFORD RUN

REPORT SEPTEMBER 2012

Written by Roy Best

The first running of this area with Peter & Caroline organizing this for us, starting from the Castle Inn car park in the Saxon town of Lydford. Lydford is set on the fringes of Dartmoor and very close to the "National Trust" Lydford Gorge, famous for its valley and water falls.

Paul, Davey and Laurie came up riding their bikes from Plymouth leaving early in the morning, arriving in good time. Paul sporting a headcam fixed to his helmet, wondered why he was looking straight at people and not moving his head. David Benn from Dorset came down for the weekend and stayed at a camp site nearby. I picked up Martyn with his Wisp on the way down, gladly he remembered his crash helmet this time, meeting up with Peter & Caroline at the car park.

Leaving the car park Peter on his Mobylette took us for many miles around much different scenery to what we have seen differing greatly from the Exeter area. All the time our ride was to be recorded by the headcam, Paul on his very hot Puch would also fly off and wait down the road motionless with headcam pointing our way. Part way through we came to a bend in a lane with a massive hill, this was very long and the bikes having no run at it soon mostly stopped. Me having brought my Honda 90 was ok and Martyn on the Wisp with the very low gear managed to pedal up with Peters Mobylette doing ok as well. David Benn on his Norman Autocycle had a problem when the clutch gave up, this bike being heavy was pushed up with the help of Paul and gladly the clutch was ok when it had cooled down. Laurie, Paul and Davey had to push there's as well, everyone eventually got to the top and we had to take 20 minutes to recover at the top. Further into the route we had a stop up at the firing range on Dartmoor, gladly no live firing today apart from the popping of the bikes and the blue smoke. Next part of the route was into Tavistock where we had a tea stop at a café, much of the talk was on lovely route and one particular hill. On leaving there we rode the last section of the route back to Lydford, and all the time Paul still taking video of us.

Finishing off for the day, Paul, Laurie and Davey made their way back to Plymouth, Peter and Caroline said buy and me Martyn and David had a pub lunch at the Castle Inn a real very old country pub. Many thanks to Peter for organizing the ride and Caroline for the doing backup, hopefully be back in the area one day.
